Project Overview
The Waste Recycling Centre at Islington is the processing centre for the local council’s recycling operations. It consists of the main processing halls, car parks and administration offices. work forms part of the council’s decarbonisation scheme to reduce energy usage and carbon emissions across the site. Temperature Control undertook all mechanical works at Islington Waste Recycling Centre including the AC, Mechanical pipework, insulation, drainage and water treatment.
Project Details
Mechanical works including the upgrading of existing AHUs and upgrading the site wide domestic hot water away from gas to electric air and water source heat pumps.
Project Description
Refurbishment of the existing Air Handling Units to provide long term operation and assist with the reduction of energy use on site by replacing the existing gas fired heating coils with electric pre heat and refrigerant coils including associated condensers and ancillary equipment. Works included the full design of fan upgrade to AHUs and associated DX heating system along with electric pre heaters. A combined Daikin and BMS controls package was installed to optimise the system’s efficiencies.
The existing Direct Gas Fired Domestic Hot Water (DHW) generation system was replaced with an air-to-water source heat pump and new LTHW services and associated equipment combined with air and water source heat pumps. Temperature Control completed all associated plant movement and mechanical pipe work installations along with system flushing, balancing and commissioning.
Project Outcome
The works were carried out in a phased approach to ensure the building remained operational throughout the upgrade process over 6 months, which was critical for recycling centres business activities. All works completed on schedule and within budget.
These works meant the full decarbonization of the centre which contributed to significant reductions in gas usage.
